frequently asked questions

  • what is the career outlook for graduates of the psyd in marriage and family therapy program?

marriage and family therapy is one of the fastest-growing fields in psychology today. the bureau for labor statistics (bls) estimates that it will grow by 23% over the next 10 years—compared to just 16% for counselor and therapist positions of all types. growth is expected due to the increasing use of integrated care, which is a treatment of multiple problems at one time by a group of specialists, such as marriage and family therapists working with substance abuse, behavior disorder, or mental health counselors to address patients’ issues as a team.

other positions graduates of this program find themselves in are: clinical supervisor, clinical program director, policy evaluator, marriage and family therapist, college professor—and that is just the tip of the iceberg.

  • what kind of job can i expect to get with this degree?

graduates of our doctorate in marriage and family therapy degree program often work in outpatient care centers, inpatient care centers, hospitals, schools, social services for local, state, and federal governments, substance abuse centers, and private practices. they can also open their own clinical practice or go into fields related to law, corrections, the military, churches and religion-based fields, and employee relations and benefits for companies both big and small.

private and public scholarships can help you meet the cost of your education. alliant international university is pleased to be able to offer a significant number of institutional scholarships for many of our doctoral students. learn more about these scholarship opportunities here. additional financial aid is available for those who qualify in the form of loans, grants, federal work study, and military aid. learn more in our financial options guide.

  • what is the dissertation process for this program?

you may begin work on the dissertation at any time, though formal approval of the dissertation and proposal requires advancement to candidacy and registration in the dissertation course. so, while you may work with faculty before that time, they will not be able to schedule a proposal meeting until you are registered in the dissertation course and advanced to candidacy. most of your formal dissertation courses will be taken during the fourth and fifth years in the family therapy program.
